Mary and I have hosted an awesome “Independence day” party for 20 years! Friends and family gather to celebrate our great country, we even sing some patriotic songs. In the midst of all the food, fun, and games I usually have some thoughts about our ‘independence”, especially since 9/11. Does the average American have more or less freedom? Do we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

I would argue that our basic civil liberties are continually being eroded. Too much regulation and control by the government over our health care system, our education system, and our personal information puts us all at risk. Most doctors I know are frustrated by controls that inhibit their ability to make recommendations without taking insurance and the bottom line into account. Most teachers I know are frustrated by having to “teach to the test”. Most people I know are frustrated by the way basic areas of their lives are becoming more and more regulated. The last time I traveled I went through a TSA scanner which seemed very invasive to me.

Currently I am very concerned with the way the vaccination issue is playing out in California. Despite scientific evidence of harmful reactions from vaccines, and the belief of most people that we should have the right to choose what goes into our bodies they just passed a mandatory vaccine policy to attend school. It’s likely that other states will follow.

As more and more controls are put on our lives, we must maintain our “Independence” by taking control of our lives. Only we can decide how we think, what we put into our bodies, and how we live. Break free of mainstream thinking, experiment with alternative options, and find out what makes you the wonderful, unique, independent human being you were put on this earth to be the best possible version of your self!

In health and freedom, Dr Matt
